In the 18th century, a small handbag – a reticule – was a must-have item of the evening wardrobe, a kind of female dress code for events. The long chain came from the katch for practical reasons: by hanging the bag on the shoulder, you could free your hands for convenient movement around the city during the day and for a glass of champagne in the evening.
